WFG: Fools edition

7 04 2011

Fools results are online for your viewing pleasure. Erik Smith won the playoff on hole 1B over John Murphy. Both guys put up some impressive scores playing the course for the first time! Here’s some pictures for your peep holes.

Russ wrote: “Thanks to all who came out and supported the event. We were very pleasantly surprised by the advanced sellout and sorry to have to turn people away. Much thanks to the leader of our band, Brad. You and your family continue to grow a community of disc golf here that I am very proud to be a part of.

The park and surrounding community can’t help but pay attention to the growing success of the sport at Whispering Falls and the neighboring courses. I know our commitment to course upkeep, improvement, and hopefully expansion is something that they are aware of and I know will support when the finances make sense.

Thanks again to all who continue to support the club and course. See you out there.”

Despite a wet first round I feel the first Fools At The Falls was a success. For the first time, we sold out in pre-registrations, for that I want to thank all the players. You obviously like something that we’re doing and we appreciate the support. Without you there wouldn’t have been a need to add a second sanctioned event at The Falls.

I have a laundry list of folks to thank, without them this wouldn’t have happened:

• My Wife, Cari- she put up with more late nights filled with scorecards and Excel sheets than anyone, helped with inventory and food preparing and just in general puts up with me.
• Russ- constant assistance with all things Whispering Falls. Couldn’t ask for a better partner in crime.
• My Brother, Tim- continues to manage the scores/payouts better and faster than anyone else, course prep work and continual sounding board
• My Dad, Greg- photographer, prep work, all around assistance with anything and everything
• My Mom, Leslie, My Aunt Kelcey and Christina Kopp- everyone raved about the friendly lunch staff, thanks!
• Matt Swartz, Thom Moore, Tim Ski and Dick Gogin- thanks for the crock pots, and thanks for emptying the trash, Dick. Sorry you got smelly.
• Dawn Gogin- I’m always holding my breath hoping you’ll offer to cook something!
• My Mother-in-Law, Judy, the potato soup was devoured before I had a chance to get any.
• My cousin, Tyler for manning the grill. You’re a life saver, we all know Timmy can’t grill his way out of McDonald’s bag.
• Ski- I think maybe you’re stealing some of the course mojo with all your cleaning and cutting, but it sure is looking nice.
• Dan Becker- lunchtime snacks, on course water coolers, and two practice baskets. You’re the man.
• Bobby Hermann and Thom Moore- thank you for your sponsorship.
• Discraft for the hook up on some Mr. T emblazoned discs, they went like hot cakes.
• Antrim Township Community Park- the support is amazing and appreciated by all.

Thanks again to All the golfers that came out. See you in August!
I also want to thank everyone reading this. If you are you obviously have been a part of Whispering Falls in some shape or manner, and without the support of everyone involved we wouldn’t be where we are. A four year old course, built where there was virtually no existing local player base, tournaments being run on a learn as we go principal, and we sold out in pre-registration and turned away a dozen others. Pretty awesome if you ask me, and it makes me proud to be a part of this.

See ya on the course!
-Brad

It was a surprisingly beautiful day on Sunday, regardless of what the weathermen had predicted. Seven golfers got a round in with our merry band of misfits, with quite a few others spotted along the way.

Brad………..57
Tim Ski…….60
Russ………..64
Eric Boger…65
Dick G……..71
Logan………80
Nick K………90

Matt and I got a little extra practice in on Monday at Wilson, even engaging in a little match play action. It was a tight battle but I finished it up on the 8th hole, winning 2 and 1.

This Saturday is the Fools! there’s still time to pre-register, and if you haven’t I suggest it. If you don’t you better be there early, we’re up to 39 pre-registered as of this morning! If you can’t play but want to come out and help we could use extra hands. See ya there! -Brad

23 03 2011

What a great weekend for disc golf. Thom, Matt and I made the trip to Elkridge, MD for the 2nd Annual Disc Outfitters Spring Equinox. We couldn’t have asked for better weather, the course looked great, the event was well run and I managed to play fairly well. Not a bad day at all by my account, although Thomas may tell you a different story…

Sunday was another gorgeous day for golfing, and Timski and I did just that. We were battling back and forth for a while, I was birdieing all the birdie holes, he was birdieing all the par fours. I managed to gain a little bit of a lead but blew it all away by trying to go for Russ’s gap on hole 15…

Eleven days, get your registration in now! Fools At The Falls, Saturday April 2nd. It’s gonna be a good time, player’s pack and lunch provided, don’t miss this first ever sanctioned springtime event at your beloved Whispering Falls. The rough hasn’t grown back in yet, she’s playing pretty gentle right now.
Anybody that would like to lend a hand, let me know. We are looking for someone to be grill master for the day, we can always use help serving at lunch, assistance with check-in, and checking scores as well. Come on out even if you’re not planning on playing.
This Sunday I’d like to make a concerted effort to rid the course of any down/loose limbs or fall tree branches and debris. Old Man Winter seems to have finally left us for the year, but he left behind a fair amount of tree damage and debris. Come on out and lend a hand.

If anybody wants to sponsor a tee sign let me know. $20 and we put your face on a tee sign as a proud supporter of the Falls. Ask your grandma, you mom, your boss if they want to support disc golf.

See ya on the course!
-Brad

15 03 2011

Sunday was a beautiful day to be on the disc golf course, and three of us did just that. My personal highlight was getting my second ever 3 on 3B. Kind of meh other than that.

Matt text me and said he was in dire need of a rust breaking round prior to Rockburn, so as a concerned friend, I felt it was my duty to oblige him. He start shaking the cobwebs off pretty quickly, and even managed to have a few sparkling moments. If anyone comes across an unmarked Ion putter, orange flight plate with black rim, Matt left it somewhere. I’m pretty certain he’d like it back.

Still time to pre-register for Rockburn this Saturday, although you better do it quick, it closes on Thursday. Matt, Thom and I are going; if you’re planning on going and want to ride/caravan with us, let me know asap as we’re getting our battle plan ironed out.

I am planning on playing early next Sunday the 20th, tee off at 10:30A. I will be stuffing my face with seafood Sunday evening and won’t be able to make to regularly scheduled 1:30 tee. So if you’d like to have your round graced with my presence on the eve of my birthday, be there ready to tee at 10:30A.

Don’t forget, April 2nd, Fools at The Falls, PDGA C-tier. We’ve got some pre-registrations rolling in, and not too many of them our local guys. What gives?

Next time you play, take a bag and see how much trash you can pick up. I managed to clean up most of a broken bottle at the base of 10A.
See you on the course!
-Brad

Thom and I enjoyed (Thom endured) a rainy cold round on Sunday. My round started on a high note, someone found my lost disc and had put it in the box. May the Falls bless your kindhearted gesture, noble soul.

Rockburn, Saturday March 19th. Who’s going with me? $35 gets you a shirt, a disc of choice, lunch, and two rounds on one of MD’s finer courses.

Fools at the Falls, Saturday April 2nd. Not to be missed. And don’t forget, sign up, tell your friends to sign up. Make it easy on your TD and pre-register.

Do your part, grab some loose limbs or debris, pick up any trash you see while you’re playing. Help keep the Falls looking fine.

See ya on the course!

Saturday March 19th

4 03 2011

Disc Outfitters Spring Equinox, Saturday March 19th. I’m planning on going, anybody interested in joining me? If you need more details, let me know.

We had a few small groups playing separately on Sunday.
Russ, Boger and the not too oft seen Dave “DBoss” Briscoe made an early trip around the track. Russ had a solid round with only one little hitch on 6.
Russ: 58
Boger: 63
Dave: 86

Nick and The Real Glen Miller showed up for the regularly scheduled round. Unfortunately prior engagements kept me from making the 1:15 tee time; sorry fellas. Glen, I have your white Shark in my bin that was in my wife’s vehicle, not my truck. My bad.
Glen M: 5 4 5 3 3 4 2 5 4 (35) 3 5 4 4 4 3 3 4 3 (33) = 68
Nick K: 6 4 6 4 4 3 4 6 4 (41) 4 5 3 5 5 4 6 7 4 (43) = 84

Ski embarrassed me. We were neck and neck through the front, but I couldn’t keep it together on the back. Coupled with a lost disc on 17 (I got a new disc for anyone that finds it) and a rare OB on 18, I just couldn’t hang.
Ski: 59
Brad: 67

Still time before I lace the disc order, if you want something, let me know ASAP.
And come with me to Rockburn, it’ll be a blast.
See ya on the course!
-Brad

23 02 2011

Double week update. February 13th saw unseasonably warm weather, and a group of 6 ventured out for a round of mob golf. Russ and I both had to bail after hole 16 for different reasons, but the rest carried on.
Dan B………63…(57 after 16)
Dick G……..70
Nick K……..85
Thom………88
Brad after 16….56
Russ after 16….58

This past Sunday was another warm one, and Russ, Dan and Myself put it to good use. At least Dan and Russ did… The wheels came off early for me and when I finally pulled some semblance of a round together it was too little too late. Russ was hot and cold all round, 5 deuces, but a few too many high numbers. Dan “I have my full bag now, so you guys are in trouble” Becker was a model of consistency. He couldn’t miss on the front 9, and by the time he missed a few (very few) on the back it was all over.

Dan….424222343(26)343443344(32)[58]
Russ…525223343(29)533242464(33)[62]

April 2nd, 2011 Fools At The Falls, PDGA C-tier.

Thom is signed up, are you?
We had our largest tournament ever last August with 79 people. The word is getting out that the Falls is no joke and we don’t play around when it comes to putting on a tournament. April 2nd will be limited to 72 Fools, so don’t be left out!
Anybody that is interested in sponsoring a tee sign, either personally or through your place of work, let me know.

When you’re out at the course make a conscious effort to pick up any trash or stray limbs/twigs/sticks. Let me know if there’s anything major that needs attention and I’ll see that it gets taken care of.

There are two different fantasy Disc Golf sites running, each one works a little different. Check them out, and look for me to beat you. Ferretdance03

See ya on the course!
