Freeze Recap
A chilly day in January was the backdrop for a successful Whispering Falls Freeze. And freeze we did, with temps in single digits most of the morning, the wind chill kept all 32 brave competitors (16 teams) bundled up most of the day.
The course played very well, with a nice frozen crust on top of the powder footing was mostly good all day. Unfortunately, most of the baskets were frozen in place so we were unable to switch up the round layouts as much as normal, but a few temp baskets did make for some interesting holes. Hole 16 turned into the “Frozen Tundra” with a pin placement out in the field between 16A and 14’s tee pad. The most talked about hole, however, was 3C. Due to the snow on the ground we thought it best for safety’s sake to forego playing 3B and avoid the hill. Not wanting to diminish the usual Whispering Falls difficulty, we opted to play from 3’s tee pad to basket 1B. Think about that for a minute. Three teams managed to card the birdie 3, impressive.
Competition was tight among the cash division, with three pairs turning in first round 53’s, one 54, and one 55. The second round saw a little more separation, but it was still a hotly contested race. The plastic division also had a tight first round with three 60’s, one 61 and one 62. Again, the second round separated everyone a little bit, but no one ran away with it. Must have been the delicious hot dog sundaes that evened the field.

The big winner was Greencastle Presbyterian Church’s food bank. We raised $200 and around 25lbs of canned food to donate. Thanks to everyone for their donations!

I want to thank everyone that came out and braved the cold and wind to help us raise money for the food bank. I also want to thank everyone that helped out and made this possible. Russell, my permanent Co-TD; My wife, Cari, for making and delivering half of lunch and all the behind the scenes support; My brother, Tim for being the best check-in taking/score checking/payout calculating/non-playing assistant I could ask for; My mom for making lunch; My dad for the setup and registration help, picture taking and constant support; Thom for bringing hot dogs and scorecards/maps; Matt and Boger for the use of their practice baskets; Ski for shoveling pads; Becker for bringing cookies; and the Antrim Township Maintenance Crew and Park Committee for their constant support.

6 12 2010

It’s been a lengthy hiatus from updates, I’m blaming the cold weather. Past weeks’ scores will be at the bottom. Yesterday’s cold and blustery Sunday Funday Travel League had
Russ, Matt, Thom and Myself in Seneca with a rather large group from Harrisburg/Boulder Woods/Codorus and beyond. In usual 717 fashion we were the first to arrive and played a nine hole loop before meeting up with the rest of the group for the official tee off. Dr. Wang (Matt/Thom) and Me and My B*tch (Brad/Russ) formed a card and ventured around the 27 hole track. There were good shots, great shots and shots we won’t be discussing again. Me and My B*tch left Seneca two strokes off the lead, but our caravan headed home rather than playing the last legs of the Trifecta. Fun was had by all, so I call the Funday a success. Be on the look out for info on upcoming events.

Mark your calenders and schedule your vacation time. The 2011 Whispering Falls calender has been set and approved by the powers that be. Take note, due to the continued success of our beloved Harvest tournament, we will be running a second PDGA sanctioned event this year. This success is only possible with the help and efforts of you, our studious club members and patrons. Without further ado:

• Sunday January 16: 4th Annual Falls Freeze; Ice Bowl charity
• Saturday April 2: Fools at the Falls; PDGA C-tier
• Saturday August 13: 4th Annual Whispering Falls Harvest; PDGA C-tier

As usual, we will be doing our best to make these events top notch, and will be asking for assistance from you. Start thinking about ways you can help out. Many hands make light work.

Trifectas

30 11 2010

Well, first off, hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend.

Now, as some of you know, the Boulder Woods Country Club Llamas of Gifford Pinochet State Park have been doing these crazy things called Trifectas. We’re taking that idea a little farther and turning it into a monthly event. We may not get through all three (3) courses the first time, but we’ll have a blast trying.

These events came out of a desire to see how much disc we could play in the limited amount of daylight that winter provides us. Now we are not going to push like crazy on the first one to finish in daylight. We are going to see what its like with a crowd. We are going to be playing Seneca Creek State Park, Heritage Farm Park and Woodsboro Park if time allots. Seneca Creek is a 27 hole layout. There are short and long tees along with multiple basket locations. We will be playing all 27 holes from the Short Tee’s. There will be a score card provided which shows the proper Tee and Basket location for Sunday.

Then we are off to Heritage Farm Park. We will be doing lunch in the parking lot of Heritage Farm Park. This way those who brought there lunch can sit down and enjoy everyone’s company and those who did not bring a lunch will have the chance to grab something on there way and eat with us all if they choose. We will then promptly Tee off once everyone is ready, this is the part that is flexible. 3pm is the rough tee time, this time is not set in stone and depends on the length of time it takes to play Seneca. There is 18 holes of disc golf at Heritage Farm Park. This course should go a bit faster than Seneca Creek.

Now depending on the amount of daylight left we are going to try to squeeze in 9 holes at Woodsboro Park. This is another flexible part of the day.

As far as schedule goes, I know its flexible but this is the best guess and what we are sticking to.

We are going to be meeting at McDonalds in Dillsburg, PA. We need to be on the road by 7:45am. So if people could be there 15 mins or so early that would be a huge help. We will then be making a stop at the Sheetz, just outsideGettysburg, where 15 and 30 cross. From there we will be heading south to Seneca.

We are asking everyone to print off there own directions and know how to get to the courses and from course to course. We have provided links to all maps and information you will need. This is in effort to make travel easier for us all on Sunday. We will provide a Scorecard and Map for each course.

Also, anyone who has a camera please feel free to bring and take as many pictures and videos as you want. We can post them on Facebook and on Disc Golf Scene for the world to see what they are missing out on.

Again, I look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday for the kick off event.

10 11 2010

It’s been quite some time since I sent an email; although by the turnout the past two weeks I suspect nobody is missing it… We, and by we I really mean me and whoever else shows up, are still playing on Sunday afternoons…With the time change we’ll start to tee off a little earlier than before, around1:15 if possible. Don’t be shy, the weather has been beautiful; it won’t be long before there’s snow on the ground and nobody will want to come out then.

Your 717 crew was well represented at the Codorus Autumn Open. Dan Becker won the Masters division, yours truly finished in a tie for fourth, two strokes off the lead in Advanced. Russell, Shawn and Matt also all placed in their respective divisions. Tim’s Un-tirement tournament was one lacking fanfare and elaborate confetti throwing, but it was a sight to behold. A few more rounds to knock the rest of the rust off and he’ll back in the swing of things. Dad and Thom also went along to provide some tournament support. Overall Fred’s first foray into TD’ing was one of success. I look forward to seeing how he grows as a TD in the future.

Sunday saw 3 golfers battling with the mobs of soccer players, horseback riders and pedestrians with dogs. It was a beautiful day to be in the woods, and it proved to be a pretty solid race most of the way. Even after enduring a most cruel heckling episode, I managed to keep it together and come away with the W.

Six golfers braved the unexpected heat wave to battle on the hallowed grounds known as the Falls. No entry fees or prizes, no tags to fight for, this was all for pride.

It was a tight match the whole way through the front nine, with only 3 strokes separating first and sixth. The back nine proved to be a little different, as Dan kicked it in high gear and ran away with it, shotting a -3 26 on the back.

Monday afternoon I drug Tim out of retirement, and Shawn and I accompanied him on his return round at Wilson. We played a quick 8 holes to loosen up and let the crowds of onlookers know that greatness was about to ensue; then it was off to the races for an 18 hole jaunt. Swanger was up to his usual flicking ways and trying to find a few more big lefty spike hyzer routes. Tim was surprisingly in mid-season form, with accurate approaches making up for shorter drives, and most if not all putts at least hitting the target. I was playing chaperon to the children, showing them how big boys play.

There’s a few tournaments coming up in the near future. First up is the Patapsco Picnic on Saturday Sept 11th. A beautiful and challenging course, the DOF guys always run a solid event and I expect this to be no different. A mere $25 for entry gets you a player’s pack and lunch. If you plan on joining Russ and I, you MUST pre-register. There will be no on-site registration for this event. There are links on the thread I linked to get you to the pre-registration page. IF you have any questions, let me know.

October 9th is the Codorus Autumn Open, being headed up by none other than Fred Hickman. You all know and love Codorus, make sure to put this on your calender.

October 24th, the one I’ve been waiting for all year. Hawk Hollow Open. I can not say enough things about this course, except I am super pumped to get back down there. Whispering Falls has been called “Hawk Hollow Jr” if that gives you any indication what to expect. I strongly suggest pre-registartion for this one as well it will fill. It’s a long ride to make if you end up not being able to play; although I would gladly welcome a caddy!

Until then, see ya at the course!

WFG 3:129/Harvest Edition

24 08 2010

The 3rd Annual Whispering Falls Harvest was a massive success. I’ve never been more proud of the club we have as I was on Saturday. Every single club member present stepped up and helped out wherever it was needed. The course looked as great as it ever has, and we received more compliments than I can remember. Our hard work is evident and appreciated by our fellow golfers.

We had a record turnout, 77 players! One minute Russell and I were trying to decide if we wanted to play foursome or start people at the bottom holes, the next minute he says “Um, Brad, we have four on every hole.” The thought of filling the course never once crossed my mind; apparently word is getting out that we run a quality event.

Lots of great golf was played, with the NOVA boys locking it down in 3 divisions. We thought the wonder boy from Lancaster had it in him, but Ian fought hard till the finish. It was a tight finish in each division actually. Thank you to all the players that made it out, thank you for tolerating the large turnout and the slightly longer than anticipated rounds. As long as you keep coming, we’ll keep having events.

Full results can be seen here. Pay special attention to who finished in 15th, and who finished in 18th; that’s the real story here.
Divisional winners:
Open: Ian Liddell……………56…56…112

Jeff Ma took down teh ace pot throw off, no aces were hit during the rounds. Chas Ford took home a basket. Dylan Horst, Myself and a few others took home some other prizes.

Without the help and support of our sponsors none of this would be possible. I want to thank each one of them for there generosity.

Thanks to my wife, Cari, for helping with artwork, scorecards, planning and just putting up with this obsession in general. Thanks to Russell Johnston for helping with everything from planning, set up, day of duties and countless other tasks. I couldn’t ask for a better Co-TD. Thanks to my brother, Tim, for doing a knock out job of check-in, score keeping and payouts as usual. We’re all eagerly awaiting your un-retirement. Thanks to my dad, Greg, for all the behind the scenes work he does, continually supporting us in any way he can. Thanks to Thom Moore for stepping up and handling making the scorecards and maps; I had no less than a dozen people tell me they were great. Thanks to Greg Walter, Matt Swartz and Eric Boger for helping out when I started handing out orders. Much appreciated. I want to thank every one that helped set up and tear down; as well as the lunch crew: Uncle Clifford, Mom Lescalleet, Dawn Gogin and Christina Kopp. Lunch was a huge hit, and you guys made it happen.

I can’t express how much of a success I feel this event was, and it’s all because of the people surrounding me. Here’s a great tournament, and to hopefully many more.

We also used the Harvest as the conclusion of our tag league.
