As mentioned before, we will be playing the “Narsty Nine” on Sunday, complete with temp baskets. I will be there at 11:30A to set up, if you’re bringing a basket and can get there then that would be great. I’d like to tee as close to 1P as possible. First round of 9 as singles, second round of 9 as seeded doubles, best score paired with worst score, second best paired with second worst, so on and so forth….

I would like to have a dry run on the proposed extra 9 holes before the Freeze. If you have a basket you can bring on Sunday Jan 8th let me know. I’m thinking one round of 9 of singles, then seeded doubles for the second rd.

1st Annual Little Heiskell Challenge

The Little Heiskell Challenge was, by all my measures, a success. Huge thanks to all 63 players that made it out, I can’t believe the turnout for a first time event on a course no one has played before. Astounding! A huge thanks to the City of Hagerstown for their support of disc golf and the trust they put in me to run their first event. Disc Outfitters hooked it up with the extra nine baskets, handling AM payouts, sweet trophy discs and just being great guys in general.

Many thanks to Greg Lescalleet and Leslie Jubb Lescalleet for helping in any way possible and Mom for the killer soup. Russell Johnston, Thomas Moore, Tyler Stevens, Dan Becker, Matt Swartz, Dick & Dawn Gogin: you guys are an incredible supporting cast. I would never think of running a tournament without help, and I couldn’t ask for better help than the crew I have.

Finally, thanks to the guys I played with, Russ, Jay Gobrecht, Ian Liddell, Naved Hasnain and Tom Dub Kim- it was an absolute blast and an honor to battle with you guys.

A quality event that all participants enjoyed was my main goal. Playing well was a secondary personal goal. Taking the W is just icing on the cake. Thanks again to everyone that helped make this event possible.

I’ve been slacking on the emails. I doubt you even noticed, but I apologize anyway. This past Sunday was a day of reflection, remembrance and honoring those lost 10 years ago. It also happened to be a beautiful to celebrate our freedom in the woods. Seven golfers made it out. If anyone (I’m looking at you, Ian) has Josh’s last name and email, let me know. • September 24th, Antrim Township Community Park Open House
9AM-?. We’ve been asked to have a presence at the Park’s Open House. We’re planning on setting up an EX-Up (Dad- this is you), handing out some literature (Thom- can you print some maps to give away) and doing some demonstrations. A decent club showing would be nice. Ideally I’d like to have some people hanging out at the practice basket to show putting techniques, a few showing some midrange/approach shots on 18, and a few demonstrating drives at hole 1. I’ll give 5 Sunday Devotional League points to anyone that shows up for an hour.

• October 1st and 2nd, Mountain Jam X, Charlottesville, VA (<<< This is a PDGA event, with Ams playing on Saturday and Pros on Sunday. They are offering trophy only on Sunday for $15, which means you’re paying less than you would for the Am day. As of right now I am planning on playing on Sunday to take advantage of the reduced fee. This event is at Walnut Creek Park. I’ve not played there, but I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews from golfers I know and trust.

• October 15th, Codorus Autumn Open, Hanover, PA
You all know and love (I hope) Codorus. I hope we can have a strong 717 showing at the Cod. This event is being run by tournament director extraordinaire, Mike Solt, MR.DiscGolf.com himself. Mike told me pre-reg should open next weeks ometime, when I know you’ll know. I’ll get you details when I have them.

• October 23rd, Hawk Hollow AM Open, Spotsylvania, VA (<<
This is easily one of my favorite courses, and a great event to boot. Biscoe puts on a solid show, and lunch is quite possibly the best bbq you’ve had, made by a vegan. I know Matt Swartz is going with me, Kelly’s talking about it too. Who’s going with us?
PDGA C-Tier, Two rounds. Players package and lunch included in entry. Entry is $35 for current pdga members, $45 for others.
Field limit 72 for each event.

Many thanks to the great volunteers we had on Sunday: My Dad, Russ, Dan Becker, Eric Boger, Greg Walter, Pat Upham, Randal Earl, Andy Slater. Thom, Glen and Ski also spent consider time at the course on a few other days. We had such a good turnout we were able to knock out all the trimming I wanted to get done, and clear for two new pin positions which will be used at the Harvest!

After the work was done the hardiest of golfers stayed and played a round. Note, 5 points were added to the totals of work day volunteers.

Things are shaping up for the Harvest in two weeks! If you haven’t registered, now is the time to do so. We’re up to 42 pre-registered, I’d hate to see some locals show up morning of and get shut out.
Kudos to everyone that has helped out in preparation. Matt Swartz is donating a case of brew for the CTB. There’s still areas we could use some assistance.
Lunch: I’d like to get a salad or two (Dick, I’m looking at you and Dawn:) )
CTB: We need to have a few more donated cases, if you can help out let me know.
Day of help: I’m going to need two to three people to oversee the Long Drive Contest. Details will be worked out, just need the eyes out there watching and spotting.
If anyone wants to donate a couple gallon jugs of water that would be awesome. We’re going to have water coolers placed out on the course and some Gatorade at tourney central.

If you can help in anyway, let me know. If you want to come and spot during the tournament that would be awesome as well.

It was apparently a weekend to read about disc golf in the local press. In addition to the article Glen sent out, yours truly was included in a write up in the Public Opinion.

Video pick of the week, an “In The Bag” segment with top pro, Steve Rico. Steve is one of the highest rated pros that isn’t sponsored. He was at one time sponsored by Innova and by Discraft, and has since chosen that he likes different discs from different manufactures and want to have a mixed bag. And Russ thinks I carry too many discs…

This Sunday we’ll try to play all the new positions, come get some practice!

Russ, Kelly and Boger were in attendance of the Mid-Atlantic Amateur Championships held at Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg, MD this weekend. Russ and Kelly were battling it out, with Russ putting up some solid rounds and leading the field after three rounds. After the dust settled Russ was in 5th overall, and nudged Kelly by two strokes. Results weren’t up when I typed this so I’m not sure how Boger finished up.

This Sunday, July 31st. Work Day in preparation for the 4th Annual Whispering Falls Harvest. We will be sinking 4-5 new basket anchors and will be focusing the bulk of our efforts on weed whacking. Areas that need special attention include:
4A pin/fairway
6B pin/fairway
9A pin
10 fairway
14 left side of the fairway
15 near pin

Anything more than the above is gravy.
If you can come out for a few hours it would supremely appreciated and rewarded with a hearty handshake, warm fuzzies in your belly and some good karma. Even if you can’t make it on Sunday take an hour or two you can spare and hit up some weeds. Your ankles will thank you later.

Also, don’t forget to register for the Harvest! There’s a large lacking of local names signed up, better get in before you get shut out.

Dick was the only one to get the correct answer on last week’s Rules School.
Steve Hyzer’s drive misses a poorly marked mando and lands well within his putting range. He steps up and cans his putt. Upon his card mate’s completion of the hole it becomes known to them that Steve missed a mando. What is his correct score?

A) Two (2), a poorly marked mando is the fault of the lazy TD, Steve shouldn’t be penalized for that.
B) Steve receives a one stroke practice throw penalty and must finish out the hole from the stipulated drop zone.
C) Four (4), Steve receives a two stroke penalty for failing to properly navigate the mando.
D) The hole isn’t complete for Steve, He must mark his lie under the basket and “unwind” the mando and still complete the hole.

Correct answer is C.

Mark your calender, July 31st is going to our pre-Harvest work day. Lots of weed whacking, two new pin placements to sink, and general clean up to be done. If you have a weed whacker it could be great if you could come led a hand. A chainsaw or two wouldn’t hurt either, there’s some light cutting/trimming that can be taken care of. If you can’t make it that day feel free to go out when you can and whack down some weeds.

This week’s video pick is less golf action and more golf humor. A few of us were talking about it this weekend, and I’m sure we’ve all experienced the Champ’s same pain… There’s some “golf course” language, so if you’re watching at work turn your speakers down a little.

I hope nobody blew off any throwing hand fingers yesterday… Sunday was a muggy and humid day to be playing golf, but we did it anyway.

Check out this great putting clinic by one of the games top players, Dave Feldberg. It’s pretty long, but a well deserving watch. Honestly, I’d rather you not watch it. You’re all great putters anyway, no reason to get any better, right? If you’re short on time, at least fast forward to somewhere around the 38min mark and pay attention to the stance rules discussion.

Speaking of rules, last week’s Rules School (I completely ripped off that name, I’d never do something that lame on my own and lay claim to it) saw a feeble amount of participation. Thom, Dick and Dan all answered correctly while Russ, Dad and Ski (sorry, you were wishy-washy) were incorrect on their first responses.

Hagerstown Greens Disc Golf
Hagerstown Municipal golf course is setting up 9 baskets on the course and opening it up to play for disc golfers. This is currently a one time event, next Sunday and Monday, July 10th and 11th from 6-8p. Cost is $3, and from what info we’ve gathered it is being used as a sort of interest gauge on the feasibility of including disc
golf at the course. This is an amazing opportunity to help grow the sport, just by simply showing up and playing. Imagine if 50 disc golfers show up… Think they wouldn’t be excited about that?
We’re trying to get a sort of organized list going of who is going on which days, simply so we can show them there is definitely an interest in this. If you’re going, let me know which day.

A nine hole temp course will be setup and available for play for $3

Heard about it from a friend who saw a flyer at the course. Went there today to check it out and talked to the ball golf pros about it and they were nice but had little knowledge about it. The course is owned by the city of hagerstown so this came from someone above these guys to tryout. Anyone can play on either day. I am out of town on Sunday but am going to try to scrounge up some players for a singles event on Monday. See if you can folks like your dad and brother out there. Get the 717 and frederick crews. Mostly I want the city to see that the sport is legit and there will be a following. I have flyers that I will scan in and post. Will let you know what I hear.

Russ and I are definitely planning on playing Monday night, the 11th. I am possibly in for Sunday the 10th. Let me know if you’re going, hopefully we can get a nice crew organized and show them some numbers that will make them want to keep the baskets on the course permanently.
